6 Dos and Don’ts for Welcoming Church Guests
Current Happenings

I remember attending a local revival meeting in the area where I used to pastor. I did not know the pastor of the host church well, but I wanted to be supportive, so I attended with my daughter.

After we sang a few songs, the pastor ascended the pulpit area, gave a greeting, and then asked for guests to raise their hands, state their names, and say where they were from. If there had been room in the pew rack between the Bible and the hymnal, I would have crawled in. To my dismay, he...

The Discipline of Praise
Discipleship Moment

by Bill Myers

As a closet Eeyore, praise does not come naturally for me. But over the years I’ve developed it as a habit . . . singing, humming, quietly thanking God throughout the day. Why? Because it focuses me on the real Truth of who He is, and not the false truth of situations.

But what if I don’t feel like praising Him, doesn’t that make me a hypocrite? Not at all. It doesn’t matter what my uninformed mind thinks or my fickle emotions feel; God’s sovereignty and love are the real...

10 Ways to Overcome Your Greatest Hurt
Today’s Top Ten

by Tina Samples

1) Acknowledge

We often hide our hurts and wounds and that can stay nestled in deep crevices for a long time. The first step to healing is to recognize we’ve been hurt. Sometimes saying the hurt out loud helps us to see the wound as it is. It’s okay to say, “Ouch! That really hurt.”

2) Let Go of Bitterness

Ichabod’s mother turned bitter over her circumstances. Once we acknowledge we’ve been hurt, we get to choose what to do with the wound. Bitterness is like a fast moving...

Recognizing the Enemy of our Souls
Discipleship Moment

by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson

Learning to recognize how the enemy of our souls uses intimidation to derail us is crucial to our growth in Christ. Succumbing to cultural and society expectations  will always keep us from living with our hearts wide open to God's Spirit. Or, to put it another way, every single time we try to weigh what other people may think of us against our desire for more of God, we risk settling for what we’ve already experienced of Him instead of reaching for the richer life He offers.

The Difference Between Complaining About Church and Critiquing It
Current Happenings

What do you see when you look at your church? What thoughts run through your mind when you ponder your experiences with church in general? If you would have asked me this question as a teen, I would replied with an eye roll and a list of grievances that may sound familiar if you also attended a highly traditional congregation. Service was too long, the music was too boring and if Jesus said come as you are, then why did I have to get dressed up?

Not only did I feel this way, but most of the...

Prayer for the Day

Lord, though my mind and heart are troubled today, I choose to focus on you and believe your Word, pray your word, and stand on it. Help me to make your promises my foundation for every day of my life.

An Interview with Trent Sheppard
Author/Musician Interview

Christians believe Jesus is God. But this belief wasn’t the starting point for Jesus’ earliest followers. While Jesus’ humanity was a given for the disciples, his divinity was a truth they had to grow into believing—it was a journey of faith. As Christians today, we’re also called into a faith journey—this time, to rediscover Jesus’ humanity. Yes, we believe that Jesus is God, but do we believe in his humanness? And if so, how does that transform our own experience of...

When Jesus Doesn’t Calm the Storm
Current Happenings

As a missionary kid growing up in Guatemala, I survived the destructive effects of a massive earthquake and a major military coup. As an adult now living in Houston, I have survived the destructive effects of a hurricane. But I don’t think I’ve coped with it very well.

Hurricane Harvey had already been at work for three noahic days when my wife, Phaedra, asked me to check on the condition of the streets so that we could make an informed decision: pack our bags or hunker down. We have a...

Eugene Peterson: What Does It Mean to Be a Christian?
Current Happenings

There’s a poem Eugene Peterson can’t get out of his head. It’s a brief, difficult poem called “As Kingfishers Catch Fire” by 19th-century poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, just the kind you might expect a thinky, reclusive person like Peterson to like. “Kingfishers” layers on simile, pointing to a “just man” (seemingly “just” as in “moral”), whom it describes as one who “Acts in God’s eye what in God’s eye he is—Christ.”

“As Kingfishers Catch Fire” is about...

10 Things Your Adult Children Need to Hear from You
Current Happenings

1. You matter.

We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you. 1 Thessalonians 1:4

Remind them they are chosen and loved by God. God sings over them, Zephaniah 3:17, has plans for them, will listen to them and be found by them when they pray. Jeremiah 29:11-13. See Psalms 20:4; 40:5; 119:26; 138:8; Proverbs 16:3.

The concept of making a difference is understandable – yet do our children need to hear us tell them they can change the world? Yes. They matter, their life matters,...
